CIQS–BC Winter 2018 Newsletter

This is the Winter edition of CIQS-BC abbreviated newsletter which keeps you connected with the local Institute.
Indu Elapatha, Professional Quantity Surveyor
Dear members,
The beginning of each New Year provides us with a few moments to deeply and quietly reflect on our previous 12 months, and on our many accomplishments. This brief interlude also provides us with a meaningful time to plan out an even more extraordinary year to come. So, this is the perfect time to update the state of your mission; update your expanded biography, and draw up your desired legacy in this New Year.
Year 2017 was a most remarkable year for the CIQS-BC, as we hosted the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS) Congress along with CIQS-National council in Vancouver. Besides bringing on stage the incredible speakers, we strived to give our members and guests the best possible seminar experience throughout the event.
With the implementation of the City of Vancouver’s Zero Emissions Building Plan earlier last year, Passive House construction went up rapidly in BC. Seeing that the market is increasingly focusing on high-performance buildings, CIQS-BC has realized the importance of keeping our members up to date and hosted several speaker events related to Passive House construction, and net zero carbon emission.
CIQS-BC is continuously focusing on elevating and expanding the profession to the next generation of Quantity Surveyors within the BC construction industry. With that objective, currently the board is reviewing the possibility of introducing new awards to BCIT students who follow the CIQS accredited program. Stay tuned for more information and call for nominations.
In addition, CIQS-BC board continues planning the Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled to be held on May 17, 2018. The 2017/2018 board will comprise of new faces with exciting new initiatives. We have 3 director positions open. If you are an enthusiastic, energetic and dedicated individual and interested in serving the board, please contact me or any member of the CIQS-BC board at or
CIQS-National council recently conducted a membership survey to identify the opinions of members regarding their proposed changes to the governance structure. Thank you to all members who participated in the survey. Restructuring committee recently released the summary of the survey; and is working on further analysis of the responses. We expect to have the update on next steps in near future.
2018 CIQS congress will be hosted by the CIQS-Maritimes on July 19-22 at Delta, Halifax. You have already received the details of the Congress in the winter issue of the ‘Construction Economist’.
In this year you can determine to break through whatever challenges you face in order to leave your mark in the world. We are planning for the 2017/2018 season and intending to offer plenty of activities including dinner meetings, skills and knowledge workshops, student and industry interactions, newsletters and many more. I look forward to seeing you in this amazing New Year and hearing about your most fulfilling accomplishments.
I wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year!

We hope everyone had a good break and is back into the swing of things. CIQS-BC was busy with marketing and organizing of events during the past few months, at the same time obtaining feedbacks and ideas to give the maximum out to members.
CIQS-BC is now reaching out to its expectations in terms with number of participants for dinner events. We thank all those who attended our last joint event organized by CIQS-BC teamed up with AACEi, which turned out to be successful. Special thanks to the event speakers Ian Kerr of EllisDon and Rod Yeoh of Dialog Design for interesting and informative presentations.

Upcoming Student Events
CIQS-BC has two upcoming events to promote quantity surveying at BCIT.
CIQS Student Mixer - The CIQS-BC Student Mixer is a great way for ABT and construction management students, who are considering a career in quantity surveying to interact with CIQS members, establish connections for potential student work practicums, obtain information on CIQS education requirements and discuss career paths.
CIQS Student Presentation – An informative 40 minute presentation will allow students to learn about quantity surveying within Canada and the local construction industry, learn about cost planning and loan monitoring, and about potential career paths.

CIQS Exams
Several students will be writing CIQS exams over the month of February. Special thank you to those who have volunteered as Invigilators. Anyone looking to write exams is asked to contact CIQS National.
CIQS Courses
CIQS-BC currently has one course being offered through BCIT Part Time Studies for the January 2018 semester, CMGT 8060 - Risk Management in Design & Construction of Buildings. We look forward to CMGT 8050 Budgeting / Conceptual Estimating being offered in the April semester. Students should review for additional information.
The CIQS-BC board has reviewed the current awards handed out to BCIT students over the past several years and determined that awards are not reaching full and part time construction management students enrolled in CIQS courses. The board will be reviewing the award structure and allocations over the next month.
Jack Chen, Professional Quantity Surveyor
CIQS-BC has been promoting the work of quantity surveyors, and expanding our profession in British Columbia. Since some of the previous members are now retiring and the CIQS-BC Board is focusing on the growth and promotion to the next generation of quantity surveyors.
We continue to work with post secondary institutions such as BCIT to educate the students of our profession and the society. We expect applications for membership into CIQS-BC to increase over the coming years and the understanding of our profession to grow. We are still focusing on the BCIT students who are taking the construction management degree program and suggesting that they join CIQS-BC. We will be also focusing on other post-secondary institutions in the province.
It is our intent to complete presentations at all major post secondary institutions and issue promotional materials to the students and faculty.
CIQS-BC Board of Directors is committed to increasing the membership and request that each member assist by suggesting that their colleagues and co-workers join CIQS-BC.
Congratulations to following members for completing their PQS and CEC designations since last AGM on May 2017
