MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Shane McKernan
Professional Quantity Surveyor

Dear members,

It is my pleasure to be addressing you this holiday season as the new Interim President of the CIQS-BC Chapter. Our Past President, Indu Elapatha, has stepped down as CIQS-BC Chapter President. Indu will, however, remain as a Director at the National level. I want to thank Indu for her hard work over the last two years. Aside from her tireless effort organizing events, representing our Chapter to many events over the last two years and executing the dissolution this past year seamlessly, she has implemented a lot of important conversations with other organizing bodies as well as BCIT that our current Chapter gets to carry on. I would like to wish Indu all the best and I know we will be seeing her at our future events.

2018 was a very busy year for CIQS-BC, which included: many amazing local dinner and social events, an insightful 2018 Congress in Halifax, NS (for those members who attended), and the dissolution of our affiliate and board of directors to become an association of members. We are happy to announce the BC Chapter was the first to complete all dissolution documentation as well as transferring of assets to National that will be used for the benefit of the new CIQS-BC Chapter. We are currently preparing a draft budget for the 2019/2020 fiscal year that will incorporate more events and presentations with students at BCIT to continue spreading awareness of our industry and growing our membership. Our BC Chapter will be putting together a draft structure of our Chapter organization (positions, voting procedures, etc.) for member review in the New Year. To maintain a solid transition into this new Chapter we will retain the existing board members until a new organization is approved by the members.

CIQS-BC is continuously focusing on elevating and expanding the profession to the next generation of Quantity Surveyors within the BC construction industry. With that objective, our Chapter is introducing one new estimating award to BCIT students who follow the CIQS accredited program as well as the possibility of organizing a BC Chapter Young Quantity Surveyor “YQS” program. Stay tuned for more information.

In addition, the CIQS-BC Chapter continues planning our next two dinner events which will be held in February and May 2019, respectively. Details of these dinner events will be sent in the New Year. A note that as we are no longer a board of directors, there will be no Annual General Meetings (AGM). All AGM’s will be held at the annual congress’. Our BC Chapter is aiming to have a revised organizational structure to present at our May dinner event for member review and approval.

The 2019 CIQS congress will be hosted by the CIQS-Quebec in Quebec City. Details of the event will be provided by National as they are finalized in the New Year.

Finally, I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year and discussing your successful year past and exciting goals for the future!

I wish you all a very happy holiday season and prosperous New Year!
